Japanese maple flowering?

We have a 4-year old acer palmatum in a container which has, for the first time, produced a crop of red flowers. I've never heard of this before - is this normal?

Little dangly clusters? Not completely unheard of but not very common on the tiny highly ornamental types.

Hi I dug up my Acer palmatum Disssectum in January this year and put it in a large pot when we moved from the south west of France to Cherbourg, It has produced a great display of little red flowers. Do you think it will set seed?

You might get seed if you have a suitable pollinator. I'm not sure if the tree can pollinate itself. You will see very quickly if they have been pollinated because the ovary will start to grow. Eventually you will get little winged seeds. They will grow into various types of japanese maple, possibly some nice coloured or dissected ones.
