| Hi Guys
I have recently bought a property with my wife which has a decent size back garden... and I need some advice. The back garden has been grassed as new but its very sparse. I also have weeds growing and stones on very dry soil... I really dont know what to do with it... Should i re-soil the garden and re-plant seeds, what about the weeds and the fact its on a slope.. this is really getting me down
How do i re-soil, do i need to dig, level off????
any help would be appreciated |

First of all, don't panic! Do you mean the grass is growing sparsely? If so, this may be because it is newly sown, and with regular mowing and feeding it will thicken up. The weeds can be pulled or dug up and until you know your annuals from your perennials use only the green bits to start a compost heap in a shady corner of the garden. This will be your most important asset for keeping your garden healthy and growing well. The stones don't really matter, and as for the slope, some would see that as an interesting feature - less boring than a flat piece of land. In the long term, think about what you would like to have in a garden. Do you want it to be easy to look after? Would you like to get into gardening, maybe grow some veggies? Once you know what you want from it, buy or borrow some gardening books - there are plenty to choose from, and I'm sure people on the forum all have their own favourites. Make a plan and have some fun designing your plot. Gardening is such a wonderful hobby and there is so much advice here and elsewhere to inspire you. Good luck and enjoy your new outdoor space! |

| Slopes are always drier. That might be a bonus at times. I think you need to see what kind of soil you have. Dig a hole, you can remove a patch of "turf" if you like, to replace afterwards. Maybe just an inch or two of soil over construction rubble, a few inches of stony soil over clay subsoil, or just stones all the way down. Or maybe nice soil. If you want a reasonable lawn then you'll need at least a few inches of decent soil. How you get it depends on where you're starting from and how much you want to spend. If you have horrible soil, you might just want to replant with something that will like the conditions. Lawns need regular mowing and fertilising, and some kind of control over weeds, otherwise they'll just get thinner and weedier every year. If it is a new build, they probably just slapped down cheap turf over horrible soil, maybe you can rescue it. With an older property, it is probably 90% weedy grasses and you should probably kill it and reseed. |

please dont dispair firstly u need to give ur grass a cut if u havent already then get urself some weed and feed u can get this at any gardencenter or even b&q.Be aware that all the weeds in ur grass will start to grow wildly and then they will turn black and die once this has happened give it a rake though its not the end of the world if u dont. U may need to repeat this procedure again if the weeds are large..i do all my clients gardens every year, and my own. U can then buy some grass seed and some topsoil and just fill in the patches give it plenty of water daily and u will have a nice lawn eventually, keep it cut short and feed it twice a year u will be surprised how quickly it will start to look good. the slope in ur garden i woould treat as a feature. If u would like some advise on designing borders plse dont hesitate to ask |
