My magnolia is dying!

Posted by Anyanka Surrey, UK (My Page) on

I planted a magnolia soulangeana early last year, it flowered, made leaves, grew, made it through the winter, began to flower again - all the blooms turned brown and since then the leaf buds keep forming, dying & dropping off. The thinner branches are also turning black, obviously dying.
I have now cut it hard back and moved it to a different spot, but I have no idea WHY it is dying - hence not sure how to make it better!
We have clay soil, but I had dug some ericaceous compost in before planting the little tree.
There are loads of magnolias in other gardens around here, all doing just fine... I'd be grateful for any help/advice!

RE: My magnolia is dying!

I don't know for certain, but this could either be frost damage, the mild period at the start of the year encouraging early growth, and it getting damaged in the cold spell, or a fungal disease. All you can do is wait and hope. Magnolias do not like lime, but they will usually tolerate clay. They do not like being moved though. Sorry, that's the best advice I can offer.
