Automatic Watering - Ceramic Cones?

Posted by richardhennessy Leeds, UK (My Page) on

Hi,

I'm looking at passive automatic watering systems for a hanging basket. By the way, I use passive to mean non-electrical and non-mechanical.

The scheme I have in mind is to supply drippers in the basket from my water butt. The butt is about 2m above the basket.

WhatI need is something to regulate the water flow depending on the soil moisture. I've seen the Tropf Blumat Ceramic Cone system - does it work?

See - http://www.blumat.at/Weninger_engl/seiten_engl/frameset1_engl.html

Thanks
Richard

Here is a link that might be useful: Tropf Blumat website

RE: Automatic Watering - Ceramic Cones?

I havent tried the cones, but they should work, after they have 'settled in', after a few days. They work by supplying water 'on demand' from the surrounding soil's moisture requirements. They need to be firmly planted, as it were.
The supplying reservoir should be below the level of the cones ( maybe a foot- 30 cms) or the water will just flow through the cones, flooding the soil.
Good luck.
