White blotches on 40yr old Laurel

| I have a 40 year old laurel bush which has deleloped large white powery blothches over 50% of it's leaves & is getting worse.
I assume it is powery mildew.
How can I treat it, as this bush is large and is close to a number of new shrubs (less than a year since they were planted).
Don't want to lose this bush as it is lovely.

| Sounds like mildew. Possibly the very dry April followed by wet May has brought it out. Very unlikely you will lose your bush. You can try a few "home remedies" like spraying old milk if you like. Fungicides are not usually recommended because the disease is not dangerous to the plant. Later in summer, prune away any disfigured parts, it will regrow very quickly. Avoid pruning at this time of year if you can, damp spring weather runs the risk of more serious bacterial infections. For future prevention, mildew is most a problem when the plant roots are dry, the air is humid or the leaves are wet, and ventilation is poor. |

| Thank you. It's good to know that the plant will survive. Just need to put up with the leaves looking ill for a few months. Yve |
