Tips for getting rid of slugs without harming pet rabbit...

Posted by cleojo (My Page) on

Hi, I have a rabit which lives in a hutch, raised on legs around a meter high, in the garden. Every year around this time slugs climb up and squeeze through the wire mesh to feast into her food bowl which has just got plain rabbit food in.
I tried putting salt down around the legs, but they still come even though a few were killed.
Is there a rabbit-friendly way I can get rid of these slugs?
Or any tips on how to prevent them coming near her hutch?
Thanks,
Cleo.

Gosh He's a right old toad. I think my frogs are much prettier and they will do the job just as well. LOL I must admit that although I get a lot of snails and slugs in my front garden I don't get many in the back which is where my pond is.
As to the poor rabbit having to share his food and lodgings with slugs, that is awful. I am wondering if you put some apple pieces round the base of the legs. It won't kill the slugs obviously, like salt would have done, but if they are munching on apples which they really like, then there is less attraction to going into the rabbits home. It isn't a solution for you really as it will still cost you in the way of apples instead of rabbit food, but it will stop the invasion in the hutch.

you can get copper strips and the like which you could attach around each leg of your hutch this would deter the slugs any good nursery garden centre should stock the same

Yes that is a great idea. I had forgotten about the copper strips. They say they work really well. Give them a go..

How about inside out duct tape pinned round legs?
