Pot bound plants

I have some pot bound shrubs to be planted out in the garden. Should I try to tease out some of the roots to spread them, ( I am afraid of leaving 'air spaces'), OR make two or three slashes with a sharp knife, and leave them to develop new roots from the cuts, OR plant them as they are, and pray?

You don't say what kinds of shrubs you are dealing with, Madeline. Some resent root disturbance, others don't seem to care. But, unless there is an overriding need, I wouldn't want to transplant any mature shrub until the Autumn.
