Cucumber conundrum!

Hi
Will I end up with bitter 'fruits' if I grow Cucumber Telegraph (Cucumis sativus,)which requires the removal of all male flowers, in the same greenhouse as African Horned Cumcumbers (Cucumis metuliferus), which doesn't.
Thanks for your help. |

| Im no botanist but it would seem to me that as they are both of the same genus the latter would pollinate the flowers of the former. Whether fertilization will take place is perhaps less certain, therefore what result on seed content and taste of the telegraph I would think can only be known through a trial. If you are at home to hand pollinate you could transfer pollen as soon as ripe and then remove the male flowers so further insect pollination of the sativus can't occur. You will surely see at least one male flower whenever a female needs pollinating. You could even reduce to one and enclose it in a bloom protecton bag while the pollen ripens. Just ideas, but maybe they will be workable. My Website |
