Pelargonium Puzzle

Can anyone explain to me why a regal pelargonium(Springfield Black)given to me last year has never flowered while cuttings taken from it in January this year are now flowering madly. It's no detriment, as the non-flowerer provides me with plenty of cutting material, just curious.

It is likely that the you have taken potentially flowering stems as your cutting material. Do you not think that if they had been left on the plant they would have produced flowers. That's the explanation that first comes to mind.

RE: Pelargonium Puzzle

It is common for stressed plants, potbound, root-pruned, or nutrient-deficient, to flower more readily than healthy strong-growing plants. This is presumed to be a survival mechanism: grow if you can, flower if you can't.

I've found all Pelargoniums flower very quickly on cuttings, but otherwise flower readily in the right conditions of warmth and sun. Use a bloom fertiliser with low nitrogen, otherwise many of them will just grow like mad.
