White things in orchid soil

i have four of my own orchids and have been given an orchid from a friend to nurse back to health as it is very poorley, the first thing i did was put it with my orchids and feed it like i do my own. on the poorley orchid i have noticed many roots are damaged and dead, also in the soil there are white beads and as this has not happened to my orchids i wonder if anyone knows what they could be as i have no idea and if it is an infection and i can treat it then the recovery will be quicker. i anyone has any ideas then that would be great especially if they know how to get rid of them.
thanks Tami |

Some suggestions Tami Root Aphids are usually globular and a light brown but do secrete a white powdery substance. Root Mealybug are white but elongated to about 2mm in length. Slugs/snails will lay bead-like but translucent eggs immediately below the surface. You say 'white beads'; have you checked that these are not perlite beads used in the potting mix. And therefore not related to the plants condition. My Website

Could it be slow release fertilizer granules? If the orchid is in soil, this could be the problem, they need extremely free draining compost, sounds like it has been overwatered as a first thought, this causes the roots to die faster than almost anything else, that and too strong or too frequent feeding.

none of the orchids are in soil its a kind of moistish bark stuff which all of my orchids came in. i feed the orchids once every two weeks with a fertilizer and all of my roots are fine. my friend hasnt been very kind to it and before giving it to me she cut off the stems which your not supposed to do. it is a special plant to her because her son gave it to her a couple of days before he died, so i really want to get it back into shape. ill send a pict asap but at the moment, have leant the cable to my sister so cannot download the picture.

There is nothing wrong with cutting off the flowering stems, after the flowers are spent, if that's what you mean. I have a couple of hundred orchids and always do this. It would help to know what genus of orchid it is as different ones, require different treatment.
