Wisteria has tiny snail-like shell nodules along its main trunks

My wisteria has brown shell-like nodules along it's main branches, they are almost like perfect half balls stuck to the branches - they are also coloured like snails, but being perfectly round with no coil to a point as it were.

They are approximately 5mm diameter.

When I break open the shells (of course expecting a little insect inside!) all I get is white powder.

Does anyone know what on earth these things are?

We have 3 wisteria against our wall, planted 2 years ago from pot when they were around 3 feet tall.

The only 'problem' I have found is that the bottom half of what I think is the effected wisteria doesn't seemed to have developed any leaves this year, although the upper part is fine and the other two wisteria are growing at the usual crazy speed wisteria does --it's hard to tell exactly which wisteria are effected due to their tangled state!

One or more of the wisteria flowered this year (hard to tell which).

Hope someone can shed some light on these 'aliens' :-)

It sounds like scale insect, which Wisteria can suffer from.

The RHS have a page of advice that might help you.

Here is a link that might be useful: Scale insect
