Risen from the compost heap?

| I often feel that to fall into my hands is the kiss of death for many a plant but how's this for tenacity.
A few weeks ago I found an old stump of a potted plant whilst clearing the compost bin. I noticed that there were some vigorous-looking roots threaded through it, so, ever curious, I potted it up to see what would happen. It transpires that it is a brugmansia which was killed off (I thought) by a sharp frost in November 2005. I chucked it in the compost bin last Spring as there was no sign of life.
How did it manage to survive a whole growing season and a winter covered by a pile of rotting veg and with no light? |

| How did it manage to survive a whole growing season and a winter covered by a pile of rotting veg and with no light? Roots are good at surviving being buried in the dark :) |

| Yes, but, I thought they found it helpful to have the aid of the the occasional leaf from time to time. In my experience, leaves just don't do at the bottom of a compost heap! |

| They were just biding their time. |

| How come they have been biding for 13 months? You mean they were just down there waiting for a chink of light to pop their heads up into? I didn't think you could keep leaves waiting indefinitely like that! |
