First Year Artichokes

I have been growing some globe artichokes from suckers planted this spring and the plants are doing well. The first globes are starting to appear in the centre of the plant. Do I need to remove these in the first year or should they be left on?

RE: First Year Artichokes

If you can resist harvesting globes in the first year the stems are best removed to divert energies into the stock for next year. Keep your bed well mulched with organic matter, protect from severe frosts if likely to occur, and next spring start to give a fortnightly application of a high potash liquid feed.
