Lawn Problem

I live in the country and my garden is next to fields and is only seperated by wire fencing , fence posts etc etc.
For the past 2 yrs the field opposite has been used as pasture , prior to this I seem to recall it being used for crops.
We have been in this property for approx 3 yrs but I estimate the lawn to be perhaps 5 yrs old . I am unsure if it was grown from seed or laid as turf.
Our grass looks like a normal type of surface, but not lawn grass, and had a uniform appearance.
I have noticed however that recently it seems to have been invaded by some much rougher grass which is growing in roundish patches all over the lawn.
Am I right in thinking that this rough grass that has appeared has come from 'over the fence' ?
Is there any action I can take to get rid of it ?

If it is couch grass it is pretty difficult to eradicate. You might try cutting a square out and replacing it with a patch you have grown elsewhere. It isn't compostable so either burn it or weed killer it.

Its difficult to selectively get rid of most weedy grasses. You could try digging it out but many grasses will resprout from the roots that you don't get. Spray with weedkiller and then reseed the dead spots. Consistent mowing and a sensible application of fertiliser will encourage lawn grasses at the expense of weed grasses but won't completely prevent them.

Thanks Weatherlawyer & shrubs n bulbs After checking things out I think that I have small clumps of Annual Meadow Grass growing in my lawn. I think that each clump needs to be treated with weedkiller and subsequently reseeded. Is Roundup okay for killing these clumps ? |

If you are sure you have an annual grass then I don't think there's much point killing it. Just stop it going to seed and it will die at the end of the year. Unfortunately, there's probably lots more seed in the soil or wherever it blew in from, so it will be back each year.

You’ll have a hard time pulling out weedy grasses... it can grow back if you weren’t able to pull tug from roots. All weeds and old grasses should be sprayed with roundup or a similar herbicide around 14 days prior to commencement of ground preparation. Check out this site: http://www.greenlifeturf.com.au/preparation.html, you’ll learn good insights on how to remove weeds and solve weeds-related diseases.
