New Garden - need assistance and tips

I was born in South Africa but relocated to the UK last year. As the seasons are totally the opposite over here to what they were in SA I have been having great fun learning everything new.

I have discovered Geraniums (yes, the true ones Johnson's Blue) and Streptocarpus (albeit that it originates from southern Africa)for the first time.

I will be planning a cottage garden in a terraced house garden which is just patio slabs, and mulch mostly and wish to change it to a cottage garden with all the trimmings e.g. pergola, bird bath, etc. It gets the afternoon sun so I am not sure which direction it is in. I also want to plan a rose garden for the front garden which only gets the morning sun - I am afraid that it is not the required 5 hours sun per day that I have read is required - any ideas on what kinds of roses to plant. Any tips/seeds or cuttings would therefore be wonderful to assist me in getting it right from the start. Maybe learn from others mistakes / experts. I only have some hellibore plants, a couple of streprocarpus cuttings that I have just propogated but could get you some SA seeds if you answer by the end of next week (22 July).

Thanks Jenni_L

Hi Jenni,
Not really sure of what information yoi are looking for, but the best advice I can give you for the back garden is if you are looking to remove the slabs etc.the soil underneath will be poor and dry so dig in plenty of compost and well rotten manure as getting the soil in good condition is 9/10ths the secret of a lush, healthy garden.

Good luck and enjoy.

Having created my first garden two years ago, I have been looking into plants. As my garden is small I am sold on the idea of long flowering plants - mostly perennials. Some flowered last year for 27 weeks (Centranthus) and some for less than two weeks. Get rid of the weakest links!

Three nice Geraniums that I have and am very pleased with are Ann Folkard, Patricia, and Rozanne. They have been in flower for a month now and should go on flowering till October or November.

Have a look at www.cgf.net . Bob Brown was a schoolmaster and ranks plants on a 1 to 10 basis.

Check out bbc gardening web site and go to 'How to be a gardener' Cottage garden.
