Propagating heucheras

My bronze heuchera has become very leggy and developed a long, bare area of thick stem. To get rid of this, and get another plant as well, can I cut it off and get the tip to root? Is there a cunning way of chopping it up to get even more plants? And will fresh foliage sprout from the bare base? Is now the best time to carry out this operation?
Any advice gratefully received!

RE: Propagating heucheras

Usually Heuchera will grow several crowns and then you can divide them. Even pieces that break off with no roots will grow new roots quickly, but don't try this in the middle of a heatwave! That long stem is best buried deeper where it will sprout new roots, and eventually develop more crowns. The existing crown will continue to develop leaves from the top and so the stem will just get longer.
