flying insect thingy

recently whilst sitting in the garden a large (about 2 inches)6 legged flying insect landed on my shoulder.as somebody else shewed it away from my shoulder we decided to catch it to get a closer look.on capture of the insect we could see it had a jet black head and two yellow eyes a red/brown top half and a yellow rear also with a stinger looking thing about an inch long it has 6 bright yellow legs and two yellow antenna's ive never seen anything like it before and cannot find it on the internet anywhere.please help!!

Is it a wood wasp? If so the long stinger looking thing is an ovi-depositor. Try Google pictures.

AKA Hornet.

Usually harmless.

No, a hornet is different from a wood wasp, but alot of people think a wood wasp is a hornet.
Do a google.co.uk image search for both.
