Propogation probs.

Hi,
I am trying to grow a few Foxtail Lily's. Seeds obtained last year have germinated a few months ago but all I have is a 6" tall stem, about the thickness of a matchstick, a little thick root system, now the stem is dying from the top. This I could understand if there was other growth visible but nothing is showing. I now have several in different pots outdoors.
Can I save them or should they be left to thier own devices.
This is the parent, once again 6/7ft tall and in flower.

I think it's normal for the foliage to start dying off around now. Mine do, and it reappears next year. But I don't grow them well - they don't get the full sun they like and haven't flowered this year. I bought them as a big spidery cartwheel of a root, which stays near the surface of the soil.

Hi,
my Foxtail lily has had 4 huge flowerstems this year and now it is dying off. So I wouldn´t worry about your plants. Leave them to their own devices, keep them a bit on the dry side and in full sun and you should have nice plants next year. Perhaps it may take them some years to flower.
Good luck

Thank you, Garden Nerd and Shrimpy. I think that you have answered my quierie adequately. I am more assured now that things will just go there own way and I will be rewarded one day. Thanks again.

I remember trying to grow these at work a number of years ago from seed. After two years of something looking like grass we threw them away at purchased bare root plants of flowering size to pot and sell on.

Ohh dear plantzman, you could be right, thats how mine looks now after a few months, perhaps they have to have special treatment as seeds.!!!
