Flowering Coleus

Hi Guys, I've a coleus I singled out from the bunch of seedlings, and put into its own pot (left the rest together, and moved to a long tray) And it has been flowering like crazy for the last 2 months or so, just wondering if this is normal behaviour for it? Never grown them before so I don't know.

But the main flower 'stem' is currently 1.5x bigger than the main plant (around 20cm I'd say) and it has decided to start growing 2 more stems aswell.

Is it just a very happy plant or normal behaviour?

RE: Flowering Coleus

Hi there, yes it's just doing what plants always try to do..flower, and then reproduce, so I suppose you can say it's gearing up for a happy event.....so to speak!! Most folks choose not to let coleus plants flower as they consider the flowers to be insignificant and just grow them for their colourful foliage, but guess that's down to personal choice, but as you say it will elongate and it may eventually weaken the plant. Flower clusters can be pinched out when small to keep the plant more compact, strong and show good colours. It's decided to flower as I guess it's now got more leg room and food as there's no competition from it's buddies back in the communal pot
