regarding apples (fallers,unusable ones etc) wondered if they can be composted or does it make the resultant compost too acid

They can be composted. If you are using a large number of apples at one time, you can always add a handful of lime with them. Even without lime, apples on their own will compost but they might do a bit of fermenting first ;)

many thanks s and b very useful info.as we do have rather a lot of unusable apples so will help swell the compost pile

Alternatively, put them out for birds to eat.
