Pyracanthus

We have three Pyracanthus plants all growing against a south facing wall. This year after a good display of flowers we had loads of berries. However, now all the berries have shrivelled and turned black. Is there any hope, or is this terminal? I should add that all the foliage looks OK.

RE: Pyracanthus

Did your berries already ripen and take on their red/yellow/orange colour this year? That would be very early. My Pyracantha berries are still completely green and I don't expect to see any colour at all for weeks yet.

Berries turning all shrivelled and black would often be caused by scab. It is a fungal disease, wet weather obviously makes it worse. Different Pyracantha cultivars are more or less susceptible. I have one plant which would be lucky to produce a single berry without being sprayed and another which is hardly ever affected.

If it is scab then there is nothing you can do at this point. Once you see symptoms, those berries, flowers, or leaves are done for. It will not be fatal, especially since the foliage is unaffected. Watch out for symptoms next year, you would need to spray at bud break (leaves or flowers) and as the berries are being set. If you get the same problem every year then I would suggest looking for a more resistant cultivar.
