They should ripen and they can be eaten. But eating them won't be very exciting! Not at all exotic.

The fruits are pretty tasteless. I'm waiting for my P. alata to flower indoors. The P. alata fruits should be more exotic and are grown in south america for markets. None are shipped to europe so it should be an interesting flavour.

If you've grown either P edulis or P mollissima (or P quadrangularis) yes, you can eat the pulp and it's quite pleasant - unless you have false teeth. In which case those little black seeds will provide some brief interesting times.

With edulis - wait until it goes black and wrinkly before using it.

With the banana passionfruit - when it's yellow and soft to touch.

If you have enough of them - can make a nice syrup for pouring over icecream. A sharp and distinctive taste along the lines of pomegranate.

For the granadilla, I'm assuming similar to the banana variety.

Hello Chris Randall,
In the U.K. P.edulis has the best flavour (its rather nice) of the ones grown outdoors, the others taste strange or insipid. Vetivert8 is spot on , you must wait until the fruit are fully ripe.
If you want to try growing P.edulis outdoors it will want some protection during its first winter, afterwards they are quite hardy and well worth growing.
Best wishes,
Gerald.

A big disappointment! Opened up a completely ripened fruit to find it filled with lovely red pomegranite looking seeds ... but pretty near tasteless.

Gerald,

Thank you for the information. I wanted to put more passion flowers on the "wish-list", and you have helped make the right choices!

Chris
