gardening with chickens

I keep a few hens which free range in part of the garden. I would like to plant some perennials but don't know which ones the chickens are likely to leave alone - any ideas? Thanks

What I find with my hens is that they love to splatter the bark chips all over the lawn, so beware, don't use too much mulch.

They also like to peck at new tender plants, so when I put out new plants in the spring, I cover them with a plastic bottle until they are about ten inches high.

Apart from these, they are a great help in keeping down slugs and also generously fertilise all the beds and the lawn too.

Keep them away from your veg. beds as they love to peck at all lettuces, cabbage, cauliflower, pak choi, etc.

Thank you, I'll give the bottles a try. I've never had a problem with them getting into my fenced veg garden until I bought my girls a new cockerel - he's certainly shown them a few tricks - they've had a lovely feast (beetroot leaves were their favourite!) Having had a fine old time he showed them the way to the front garden (they've never ventured there before) and they all had a scratch about in my beautifully tended bark mulched beds! And to add insult to injury since he's been here they've all stopped laying - I think I know what's for lunch this sunday... only joking!
