 o
30' border in front of hedge

I have a north west facing 4' high conifer hedge fronting the road. There is a 4' run of grass in front of it and I'd like to create a border of perennials leaving an 18" run of grass from the border to the road (plants would get ruined - there's no pathway)therefore I'm only looking at a 30" border. It's quite dry and partially shaded. It gets full sun towards the end of the day. Can anyone recommend any perennials (summer flowering preferably) that are quite long flowering with reasonably neat foliage - bit of a tall order I know! Look forward to hearing from you - sorry it's a bit rambling - I'm new to this forum stuff as well as quite new to gardening. Thanks

dry shade and long flowering don't usually go together, so I would suggest concentrating on plants which have good foliage and would be tough enough to survive being walked on occasionally, eg herbaceous geraniums such as G macrorrhizum, vinca (periwinkle), aquilegia -- dark shades of the common 'granny bonnets' usually do well in shade. for silver foliage stachys byzantina (lambs ears) copes with shade. The first three can all be given a severe trim when their foliage gets unsightly and will then produce fresh leaves.

Thank you for your advice - I'll definitely give those plants a go especially as I have most of them in other parts of the garden do you think it's too early to split perennials yet (I'm impatient to get on with it!)
