Cranefly from caterpillar

My daughter put a yellow and black fuzzy caterpillar into a tupperware container with some leaves. The caterpillar appeared to be making itself a cocoon. The next day there was a cocoon and no caterpillar. The cocoon was round kind of oval. We took out all the leaves but the one that the cocoon was on.
A month later there was no cocoon and there was a leather jacket (with wings), in its place. The lid with air holes (small ones) was on the whole time. The larvae on the web of a leather jacket did not look at all like the caterpillar. What the heck happened to the caterpillar???

RE: Cranefly from caterpillar

very puzzling indeed. Cranefly grubs dont have legs or 'fur'. Someone may be playing a joke on you
