Favorite Economical Spring Bulb Suppliers?

Hello all,

I have just celebrated our 1 year arrival to the UK anniversary and would like to spruce up our rental property with some spring bulbs: daffodils, tulips, anemones. Plus, I'd like a few amaryllis and hyacinthes to force inside as well. I hate paying 5 pounds/bulb for amaryllis at the local garden centers.

When I googled UK spring bulbs the number of sites was incredible. Do any of you have favorites that have sent good bulbs for a good price?

Thanks,
Bobbi_p

If you can get to a branch of Wilkos I would recommend them for all the ordinary bulbs. I doubt if they'd do amaryllis, though.

Amaryllis are often not stocked until spring because that's when people tend to plant them in the garden.

Were you thinking of online sites? Any garden centre will have a mass of bulbs for sale right now, unless you are looking for something special that is probably the place to go.

For online sales, Pottertons are always reliable. If you just want to drool, or have a real urge to collect rare plants, try Paul Christian.

I think bobbi may be thinking of the large flowered Amaryllis aka Hippeastrums which are grown indoors, frequently around Christmas. They are available in lots of places in the run up to Christmas but I have found them cheaper after Christmas in garden centres rather than shops. They get cheaper then, as outlets want to clear space for Spring stuff. I also tend to get the loose bulbs and plant them up myself rather than buying the ones in gift boxes which include the pot and compost. If you want to force hyacinths for early indoor flowers get the ones labelled 'prepared' otherwise they will not be much earlier than the outdoor ones. Another thing I always do for cheering up the Winter is a few pots of Paperwhite narcissi.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, indeed, I was speaking of the Happeastrums for amaryllis. I, too buy the loose bulbs, but they still cost me over 4 pounds each last fall.

I was hoping to find an online source that would allow me to browse and choose some of the fancier varieties as well as some of the species tulips.

£4 seems to be the going rate for hippeastrums, though you do get a nice big bulb for your money. I don't think it'll be possible to get them cheaper than that.

Our local garden centre sells loose bulbs in boxes. They have a reasonable choice and are usually good value. I tend to avoid anything bagged up, they are usually poorer quality and more expensive.
