laurel roots

I inherited a very old laurel hedge which I have spent this week cutting back to around 6' to 8'. I have thinned the hedge where necessary but this has left me with some very large stumps to get rid off. Can any suggest an efficient method of doing this please?

RE: laurel roots

The only method I've found that works is liberal amounts of elbow grease and a mattock. They tend to root fairly shallowly, so you do need to trace the roots out a fair distance from the stem. On heavy soils this is a heavy job.
