Hamamelis

Any information on these please - I think I may plant one in place of my Gleditsia - winter flowers and nice fragrance, not too big, likes sun.

Any comments /advice please?

I think I'd prefer a red flowering one.

Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane' could fit, I don't know about the flowers fragrance though.

When you say "not too big", these shrubs do get quite big with time and, more than that, they spread a lot. I've seen a 70 years old specimen in Belgium which was more than 4m (13') wide, a gorgeous sight to see in winter but needs plenty of room to fully express its beauty. In addition, it's almost impossible to prune them without spoiling their shape which has to remain natural.

Not such an easy plant to use actually, it does best in a sort of woodland setting and you have to be prepared to wait for many years before it really becomes beautiful. But it's worth it ;-)

Here is a link that might be useful: Hamamelis x intermedia 'Diane'

Thanks - I'm still working on it, something slightly smaller may have to do - there are one or two Viburnums that fit the bill too - I'll keep looking.

How about a Mahonia?

A cotinus... or a cercis canadensis - just gorgeous
