Fasicularia bicolor - hardy?

Posted by suiko Oxford, England (My Page) on

Got bought one of these. It's supposed to have a spectacular flower and my sister was assured it was hardy where she bought it (in Devon), But I'm in Oxford and it has to expect some nights down to -10 every winter. Anyone know anything about it?

Fascicularia bicolor is the correct spelling. Can't take much frost, I think you'd kill it outside. Maybe in a sheltered spot if you fleece it on very cold nights.

I have grown this outside in Cheshire for more than 10 years and never seen any damage. It flowers each year and then occasionally I have to get in and hack out the dying (it is monocarpic) heads.

I have some offsets rooting at the moment but they can take up to 2 years outside to root. It is tough as old boots.

Best regards

Chris
