Hi Guys,
Can anyone out there tell me the best time to lift and transplant the following 1 to 2 year old plants to give them the BEST possible chance of survival please.
HAWTHORNE ~ COMMON & PORTUGESE LAUREL ~ Buddlea. |

| The best time would probably be very early spring, but now should be fin especially for the Laurels. Be sure to get as much undisturbed rootball as you can. Dig the new holes before you dig up the plants so that they are out of the ground as little as possible. Water in well, even if it is going to rain. |

| I have never had trouble transplanting as we dig out a very large rootball, we make sure that the next hole is already dug and ready and slide the plant right out and into its new home. If you do this quickly and water it in very well, you should have no trouble transplanting at any time of the year. I have even moved plants when they were in full bloom. Iona |

Thanks Guy's n' gals, your comments are appreciated. The problem is the plants I wish to lift are quite large, probably between 2 - 6 years old, and around 5 ft tall and same for spread, as they are not deciduous I am not so sure about the dormant period if they indeed have one although I would think it would be similar, if they do or perhaps they just slow down and keep ticking away slowly. Also as they are effectively trees they obviously form tap roots so that is difficult to get that precious rootball, hence the question when is the ABSOLUTE BEST time to transplant and anyone got any special tips. I am concerned about frost getting to them before they put out their roots, which makes me believe rightly or wrongly that the best time would be the spring just after the last frosts. Thank you once again |
