Hydroleca/ Hydroton information anyone?

Hello, I have used an ebb and flood hydroponic growing system for about ten years with acceptable results. I use what I bought as 'Hydroleca' for growing my plants in. This has always suited me. This year I extended the system and needed more 'Hydroleca' which I bought from GardenDirect where I bought my original supply. To cut a long story short - it ain't the same! What I got is Hydroton, I think. It is large size, very light and floats in water. Using my system I didn't produce a single decent plant in the Hydroton, those growing in the old Hydroleca did fine! I grow tomatoes and peppers by the way, if anyone wonders... The original Hyroleca is smaller (about 10cm and less) and DOESN'T FLOAT, the new stuff does! Looking on the Internet has totally confused me. If I search for Hydroleca I get pictures of Hydroton, both of the names bring up identical descriptions! Does anybody out there know of a brand of expanded clay pebbles which doesn't float on water? Hydroton seems to be widely used in Hydroponics, am I using it the wrong way? I would appreciate any thoughts, thank you. Lyn.
