I would remove the turf and make sure the underlying soil is free draining otherwise fork some gravel or gritsand into the surface. Don't dig deep as that may lead to uneven finish of your pebble surface. Level it off (if a level surface is what you want) and lay your landscaping fabric, covering with pebbles or large gravel as is your preference. If you are planting through the fabric you can do so as you progress, or afterwards remove sufficient grit/pebbles to expose the fabric, make a cross cut, fold back the pieces and make the hole for your planting; finish off at the original level, replace the folds and cover over again. Best of have the plants available from the beginning if you intend to incorporate plants.

Pruning of shrubs must start with - what shrub is it?
Not all shrubs require pruning and those that do will be pruned according to how you want to grow or train them. If flowering shrubs the main consideration is - do they flower on current or previous years growths.

A common climber that has red leaves at this time of year is Virginia Creeper. Check out the link for pictures. It should be cut to keep it away from windows and the roofline. You might also want to trim it to reduce the thickness but this isn't usually necessary with Virginia Creeper.

Here is a link that might be useful: Virginia Creeper
