I have been given a variegated version of this plant about 3ft tall. Can anyone tell me if it is very hardy and will it withstand being planted in the shade? I have never seen one of these before, I will probably plant it against a fence but it will only get sun for a couple of hours in the morning.

My experience is that it has been quite hardy here in Yorkshire owing to the much milder winters over recent years. If there is risk of temps down to below -5C or strong freezing winds it is likely to loose it foliage and soft upper stem growth. I find it best as a well shrub in a sheltered situation. Partial shade is no problem, in fact it prefers it.

Others may have different experinces with X Fatshedera lizei 'Variegata'.

I have the plain green version rescued from an office waste paper bin several years ago. It is outside in shade and has survived ok. (Somerset) It is not self-clinging and needs tying up.
