Blueberries - HELP

| Hello,
As a novice gardener (an overstatement at that) I am looking for some advice. It is my mother's birthday in early december and I am looking to buy her a blueberry plant. I need some advice on which variety to buy, when to buy it as I will need to look after it for a short while, and where to buy it from.
I live in the UK and December can be a pretty bleak time. Is it wise to buy a blueberry plant then? I don't want to look after it for too long as my Mother is the expert and not me (it will be a shadow of itself if I have it for too long unfortunately).
Is it wise to order it mail-order? What is a good price? I heard they grow best if two varieties are planted together - can anyone verify this?
I'd be so grateful for any advice!
Thanks

| Most good garden centres sell blueberries and a good all round variety is Bluecrop. You don't need two different varieties, just two plants, so two Bluecrop plants will be fine. If you can't find them in a garden centre or nursery there is a good mail order place which I think is called the Dorset Blueberry something or other (look online?) They will send you plants with full instructions on care, etc. Now is a good time to buy. If you buy from a garden centre your plants will come in pots and will need little care between now and December. Keep them outside and expect their leaves to turn red and drop, if they haven't already. This is what they do in Autumn. Water the plants occassionally if the weather is dry, but only with rainwater. They aren't so keen on tapwater. Having said that, tapwater is better than no water if the compost is drying out, and you may live somewhere with soft water, in which case tap water will suffice. Hope this helps! |

I asked for one last Christmas too. I had to plant it in a pot because it required ericaious soil. It had a few berries this year but I think the squirrels nabed them. I may add that the autumn red leaves are superb. You may need to ask you mum on height, mine is quite tall for a pot...worth thinking about. can't remeber the name sorry, but didn't know they needed to be planted in pairs, i'd better check out that blueberry online shop. |
