Is it too late to sow Sweet Pea seeds into open ground?

Is it too late to plant sweet pea seeds now. The books say Autumn and I am aware that we are almost at the end of Autumn (only planted my bulbs last week-end :-)

I live in Dorset, Zone 9. I have been a bit hesitant due to the weather forecasts saying that we are going to have the worst winter in 50 years.

I don't think that you will gain anything by an autumn sowing. And as you say, we may be starting a long cold winter.

In a lot of cases I have followed nature, if the plant produces seed and drops it in its own time, it must be right, and in a lot of cases it works, sometimes have had to thin out if too many seeds germinate. To play safe I do save some seed and follow the instructions in a good garden guide book.
