I do a lot of division about this time of year until the temp hits 70 or so. I don't like to divide them when temp climbs too high. I don't like to do much division in late fall either because of the unpredictability of hard frost. The heat wave we are experiencing is throwing me off kilter, though. This is way too warm too soon. PS. The ground below the surface is still soggy, though. You may need to wait a bit until it dries up some more.

I have mostly irises and foxglove around my roses. I find irises easy to lift up and divide since they like to be planted shallow. I try not to plant the irises inside the drip line of the roses, but they encroach anyway. It hasn't really been a problem Daylillies can be a bit harder to dig up and I leave a bit more room. I think putting them in front of the rose plant and leaving a buffer space is a better idea than interplanning as far as day lillies go. As far as fertilizing, I don't! I figure the stuff I put down for roses will also feed the other plants. I use mainly organic fertilizers and may sprinkle some in when replanting the divided irises for example.

whaas, there are some considerations that only you can make here. Namely, what kind of soil are these divisions going into? If it's loose, moist, crumbly, fertile, this is all in your favor. If it's dry, hard, lumpy, etc., don't divide the geranium into it. You need to be sure to give the planted divisions a good mulch immediately after planting. If your weather conditions are even thinking about being dry, work your soil, remove the soil for planting, then WATER the hole thoroughly and let it soak in, then put the plant in the hole, backfill, mulch, and water thoroughly again. Irregardless, don't allow the soil around the plant to go bone dry. Monitor it carefully for a few days to get a feel for how often you need to supplement. I do not grow Jolly Bee, but I have divided Rozanne several times. She never ever likes it, but I have never lost a division. She always wilts badly for several days, but gradually perks up and blooms, though late. I have always divided her in spring, and of course, my climate is much different from yours. My gut tells me you can get away with doing it this fall (even now) if you fulfill all the above criteria, but if you cannot risk losing it, you might want to plant Jolly Bee as is and divide it in the spring. One more suggestion: If you go ahead and divide it now, it wouldn't hurt to put something over the divisions to provide some shade until they settle in. I have used cardboard boxes with the tops opened up with good results. Just a few days can make a big difference.

Are you thinking this because you want more of the same kind of plant? If so, I'd wait a few years before dividing these perennials... give them a chance to settle in and get used to their new home by spreading out roots, etc., and give yourself a chance to see if each plant is in the right spot. You'll probably be surprised at how much they do grow in one year. Absolutely true advice... worry more about the soil your plant is living in and less about the bugs you find. You'll never be able to get rid of all the bugs but you can search for ways to improve the soil and encourage natural pest control into your garden. Molie
