Parsnip variety for milder winters

Hi all

Does anyone have a suggestion of any parsnip variety that would give good flavour even in a frost-free winter? I will be back in south-west Ireland in March and am working on what veggies to grow; I wish I could remember what parsnips we grew last year but although they were a good size and not too woody, they had very little flavour. I think that maybe parsnips are one of thoese veg that need a good frosting to bring out the flavour, but maybe I'm wrong there! But the west of Ireland does hardly have any frost, at least where I live.

Any ideas welcomed!
Cheers
claire

Thompson and Morgan claim that their 'Excalibur' is sweetly flavoured and has a good resistance to canker.

Tender and True is a very tasty old variety - well worth looking out for.

Parnips are sweetened and the flavour enhanced by exposure to temps around freezing; it increases the rate at which stored starch is converted into sugar.

Hi Peter
Thanks for your reply. I looked up the two you have mentioned, I tend to steer cleer of F1 types. . . . but the Tender & True does look good - I wonder if it would be more likely than other varieties to come out well in an insufficiently cold winter as it would experience in south west Ireland?
By the way, I have had a look at your web site, it looks really good Peter! I am looking forward to looking through it.

You are welcome Claire. I agree, the open pollinated and long established varieties are well worth trying.

I have grown tender and true and one called something like lancer in Cornwall a few years back, and we don't get much frost. They both made good size roots.

Hi Baalmaiden
Thanks for your recommendation. As you say, Cornwall is not too frosty! Tender & True is starting to look like my choice here; though Lancer is driving me mad - I could have sworn I saw it in the T&M catalague and now I can't find it for the life of me! I seem to remember it was an F1, so that would rule it out for me (well, you know, just in case the threads of society break and I need to keep seeds!).
Cheers!
Claire
