Frogspawn with white dots

I've just transferred some frogspawn into a container and I noticed that some of it has white spots on the black centres. Does this mean they're infertile? Can't remember having seen this before or maybe I just haven't noticed.

Hiya,

I think the answer to that one is yes---

Been quite surprised though, the spawn brought in that froze had quite a lot of eggs that didn't hatch with the others so I assumed that these were killed off. Kept it all in the tank though and they have eventually hatched as well, about 2 weeks after their sibs from the same clump. So the eggs that didn't survive were the ones that did turn white.

amazing critters---

Cryogenics eh? Interesting stuff!

I took spawn from two clumps, so I'm hoping I'll get at least some of it to hatch out.

You'll be interested to know that I only found one tadpole in the container from last year. He's got tiny back legs but doesn't look like he's really using them yet, so maybe he was legless over Christmas. Weren't we all!! (Only kidding.)

I did a filtering job to see what was in there and found loads of water hoglice. As you know, they eat all the detritus but there was quite a bit of what I presume is their faeces, so I used an old popsock to clean the last bit of water. Then I spent ages trying to rescue the hoglice without harming them, so I could put them back into the original container! Idiot or what?

If you use a seive, then the tiny bits will go through leaving the hoglice in the seive (or tea strainer). You may want to keep a special one for this purpose!

Ta, Damp! I shall get a tea strainer immediately. Couldn't believe the time I spent trying not to hurt the little critters!
