Unexpected visitor

This afternoon I found out why the stickelback population has been so stable--spent much of the afternoon watching a kingfisher dive into the pond, catch fish, whack them on a branch and gulp them down!

Never expected to be able sit on the sofa and watch a kingfisher in a town garden....

Quite stunned really!

Here is a link that might be useful: the evidence!

Wow! You are sooo lucky. I don't think I have ever seen one. And well done for photographing it.

RE: Unexpected visitor

Thanks, still don't quite believe it myself. Came back the next day but quite skittish, so I don't know if it has been coming for a long time but as I am not often home in the day, or if this is a very rare visit. Another good reason to keep stickelbacks!

Frogs have just about finished their antics, but the forecast is set for freezing this week. We have the bubblewrap out to lay out over the spawn to give some insulation. While I love watching them come, I do wish they would wait until after all the frosts. But it only takes a few warm days to get them going I guess.

Best wishes with your multiple ponds!

I just love Kingfishers. They are such a lovely colour. I think I might even sacrifice my stickleback collection for a good glimpse at the kingfisher. Lucky you.
