Little leaves may be over wintering leaves for ticking over so dont 'warm' it just yet.

RE: Have your lilies started

Mine have had the 'little leaves' all winter. Not noticed any new growth yet but never have at this time of year. It's a bit too early here at 600ft above sea level.
However both types of Marsh Marigolds are in flower (white single, and yellow double), the Bog Arum has started sprouting as has flag iris, water mint? and the creeping jenny (the part trailing into the water)is running riot and in fact stayed green all winter giving cover for the fish.
Blanket weed of course doing VERY well [lol]
Can't wait for the 'taddies' to clean up the ponds.
Forgot the watercress but it's taken for granted as it's always growing!

Some water lillies wont start to show for another month yet, so dont give up on them till mid May at least, if they dont show by then they are firewood lol

Had a good look at some of my lilies yesterday when cleaning the pumps, yep most are sprouting :)))
I've never taken much notice before of when they start, I just wait for the leaves to break the surface.

My lily has a leaf sitting just below the water surface, it will probably be level and sitting on the water within a matter of days.

My Marsh Marigold is doing very well, there's about a dozen leaves above the suface now, and I only bought it towards the end of summer last year.

My water hyacinths didn't survive the winter, but I kept one in a pot in the greenhouse and he's fine and back in the pond.

Hi Sean,

I've had lilly leaves on the surface for about a week now, - only one per plant, but 5 of them have obliged. I'm not sure what they are in terms of names, but they have been either pink or white for the last few years.
I'm expecting some new plants next week (but no lillies) and am very excited as it's all looking a bit bare out there, (having thrown out so many flag irises). I may well have to dispose of some lillies as I was too successful taking cuttings last year - they all grew after I expected them all to die!

I have a number of lily leaves already flat on the surface.

I also have lots of little taddies which I'm very proud of!

Strange, my garden must be a cold pocket. We are still behind with everything - even compared to gardens 1 mile away...

Ahhh these southern softies :-), eee baa gum and eckythump.

Actually the growing season seems odd this year, I am ahead of a guy from Plymouth in lily growth etc and normally he is a month ahead of me. I have a pad on the surface from a shallow attraction and loads coming up from those in the plant pond. Those lilies in the fish pond are behind those in the plant pond but they are all dwarves and the water is noticably colder.
I think I will give them a feed sometime soon to perk them up a bit.

Yeah, well, I'm not a Southerner, I just live here!

The Water Lily that has loads of leaves open on the surface is the Firecrest I bought as a kit from a certain DIY store late summer last year. The leaves are maroon colour. It took time getting going last year and only had a couple of flowers which didn't come out till late Autumn. Maybe this is why it's determined to get a head start on the others this year.

My Marsh Marigolds ar blooming lovely! My red stemmed Parrot's Feather made it through the winter, albeit looking a bit worse for wear. The birds like sitting on it to have a bath - they seem to treat it like a loofah!!

Everything else is starting to bud and I'm really looking forward to my second full year of ponding...
