Odd time of year to be doing it, but I must recommend Wilkinson's pond/garden net. You can usually only get hold of it in spring/summer because they make way for Xmas things at Autumn time.

The holes are half the size of ordinary garden net and it's stiffer plastic, which means any over-hanging bits aren't a hazard to birds. They can get horribly trapped with ordinary garden netting that most people use around the garden.

I needed a bigger size, so I sewed 3 together using strong fishing line.
