| West London Diary:
1st. Frogspawn - 23rd. February.
1st. Ice of the winter on pond - 28th. February. (Not thick and breakable by leaning on it with a cane.)
I've tried to post my frogspawn date on the BBC/Springwatch site (Woodland Trust) but haven't been able to activate it to post my details. Has anyone else had a problem? I e-mailed the Woodland Trust, but no -one has replied. |

| Congratulations on the spawn, I didn't have any problems posting it on the BBC/Springwatch site, but I had to try twice to record the bumblebee as the first time the instructions to state your postcode didn't come up. It might be a bit of a tempermental site. Our pond has been freezing almost every night for over a week, and have already lost a few on the top, the ones well under water seem to be coping OK. Wish it would get warmer though soon (I did tell them to wait until warmer weather, but did they listen??) |

Did you receive your activation email? If you did, just log in. Don't forget your log in name is your email address that you registered. If you didn't receive your email then you may need to register again. At what stage are you getting stuck? By the way there's a message board on the BBC website called springwatch where their experts answer questions (occasionally). By the way, when you add a sighting it automatically registers it in today's date. To change it to 23 Feb by clicking edit entries. |

| Thanks for replies. Damp, I'm confused about your remarks about activation e-mail, log-in, etc. All I did was go into BBC.co.uk/springwatch, went to record signs of spring, clicked on 'frog spawn first seen' and clicked ‘record.’ Then it changed to the Woodland Trust site, where I had to scroll to the far right where it said ‘select a species to record.’ I clicked on frog spawn, (‘record’ did nothing.) There was ‘Frog spawn first seen’ at the top of the page and further down it said 'Have you seen one' with a 'Please enter the date observed' box. It was this box that I couldn’t click into. No curser sign (flashing vertical line) came up and nothing happened on the 'continue' box next to it, either. I've tried a few times, but can't activate it. It appears that you know something that I don't! Please can you explain further.... Thanks. |

I have registered properly on the uk phenology site to record lots of things including the springwatch items....I assumed everyone had to register to do the sprringwatch events. I'll have another look at the site. |

| No frogspawn yet, but I've off work ill this week and noticed my first frog back in the renovated pond - funny how little things like that really make your day/week. I wasn't sure they'd recognise the place now! It's interesting as we had frogspawn by the 16th last year, but I suspect it will be later this year. I'm just hoping there's going to be enough cover as we took out so many flag irises and I'm waiting for the new pond plant season to begin. (My husband thinks I'm mad by the way getting so excited about a single frog!) |

| Haven't seen a frog yet, just the massive load of spawn which is a first for me because I only built my pond in 2003. I had one youngish frog and frogspawn donated that year to start me off. |

| We installed a small pond last year so we're a bit new to this. The neighbour donated some tadpoles and a couple of newts which produced young last year. I'm slightly concerned because the neighbours now have spawn and have spotted a newt but we've got none. There seems to be one or maybe two frogs lurking in the pond just now but no sign of any newts. Could it be because the pond has only just moved into the sun or does it take time for the frogs and newts to return? I'd hate to lose the newts because they're such fun to watch. Grateful for any advice. |

| Welcome to ponding--and the unpredictability of wildlife. Frogs, and I believe newts, and especially toads, like to spawn in the pond they were brought up in for the most part. It also takes a few seasons to mature enough to spawn. So the tadpoles that hatched in your pond last year will take another couple of years or so to mature enough to spawn themselves. The other thing is that at spawning time, they do like a crowd, and so your neighbours pond I imagine has been really noisy so attracting amphibians from a long way away as 'the place to be'. And they do travel a long way between spawning, I wouldn't be surprised if your amphibians thought the neighbours party was a bit more lively. I have newts, but I do find them hard to spot (I only see them at night with a torch), much less to count. They do like cover so you may have newts, but have not seen them yet. After 6 years of ponding, I have yet to see a 'newtpole' so lucky you for spotting them! Finally, does your pond have sloping slides so they can crawl out, and shallow areas? Frogs don't like to lay spawn in deep water--the deepest I have seen it is my pond is in less than 6 inches. Newts also like places to hide next to ponds, and I have noticed they have made their homes underneath a rockery that line a part of the pond. Newts I understand also like particlar plants to spawn in, like water starwort. There are some good information sites on amphibians, but I don't have time to list them now. Another night perhaps!
