Did you know?

Looked at 'conversations' on the US forum and the reason for all the new adverts on these forums has now become very clear.
Spike has sold Garden Web!!!
He's sold it to iVillage and is now an employee.
Evidently the 'Home' page for Garden Web has completely changed but as I never access the site through this I've not noticed.

| Yesterday at work... during a quiet moment I visited this site. A junior member of staff came into my office but couldn't see what I had on my screen. He began talking to me, when out of the blue came a blaring noise from my computer. It was a video advert... I've never had one of those before. I was so embarrassed. Feeling quite hostile towards GW at the moment, what with this and Spike's unfair discrimination against some of my previous posts... he needs to get a life! I got bored reading all those 'brown noser' threads from your link Sue. Why can't the Yanks just say it as it is... they are soooo 2 faced! |

| If you are using Internet Explorer you can set pop up controls with XP but if you are using windows 98 or ME you will have to get a pop up blocker. A better alternative is to use Firefox with its better security. I have never had a problem with pop ups as I use AOL's version of IE which has pop up controls. Kazzie, what on earth are you talking about? |
RE: Did you know?

| I honestly don't have a clue what I'm talking about!!!! Just feeling fired up because of all the newly appearing adverts... my ad blocker was working fine, they have found a way of by-passing it now. In the past, dear Spike has deleted a few of my posts because they didn't obey the rules or something e.g. in the heading I have used someone's name e.g. Alison. But on the same page as my thread, others had used names... Grrrr... he targets the women! Re the 2 faced thingy and Sue's link, some of those who have posted a 'you are wonderful' message, have been critical about the guy on other forums. In all the time I've been here, I don't think I've ever seen anything turn nasty with the Brits... the US forums are spiteful... attack and defense. Anyway, just ignore me... I'm still reeling from embarrassment about the audio advert, which put me in a terrible situation. |

Kazzie I've been on GW for quite a few years, starting on the US Pond Forum. (There was no UK pond forum at the time) I asked Spike if we could have a UK pond forum and after requesting me to post asking for UK supporters, he agreed. You must realise that a small forum like ours isn't a lucrative proposition for him at all. He started GW many years ago because if HIS interest in gardening which he wanted to share with others and it grew over the years into the very large site it is now with 100's of forums. I can be as 'brown nosed' as the rest. I've always found Spike easy to 'talk to' and very receptive to extra suggestions such as our gallery. I can't see similar requests being treated so 'uncommercially' in the future. Nearly everyone gets 'warning messages' at some time (I've had a few myself) It's Spikes way of keeping things under control. It's automated and with the thousands of postings on the many Forums there are bound to be a few mistakes made. Many, many people have made life long friends through these forums, in fact as you probably saw on the Forum you mentioned, some have even married! The 'new' adverts have started since he sold GW to iVillage and I agree they have 'lowered the tone'. My worry is that iVillage will 'pull' small, non profit-making forums such as ours or start charging for Membership. Time will tell. I would like to thank Spike for the time and effort he has put into this forum. Well done Spike. It was nice to deal with you as an individual instead of a faceless Corporation. Is this 'brown nosed' enough? Sue |

Ooops! Forgot to put [LOL] at the end of my posting. It sounded much too serious. (Wasn't 'having a go' Kazzie!) Sue |

You can have a go... its no problem. We've both had different experiences, that's all. Anyway, I thought I told you to ignore me Never heard any stories of forum weddings or romances though. |

| I think thats the first smilie I have seen on GW, well done. Re "Never heard any stories of forum weddings or romances though" well thats me blown out then, I am gutted. ;-(((( |

Ignore you Kazzie? Couldn't do that [lol] What was the audio advert for?....hope it wasn't for an embarrassing product! I've never had any of these but I also use AOL pop up and animated media advertising controls. Have noticed I am getting Trojan alerts lately from Norton Internet Security when on GW. Could be just a coincidence. |
audio ads

| I have had a couple of audio adds, all clean, the first scared the crap out of me though. I am deaf in one ear and have no directional sense of hearing, I couldnt figure out where the voice was coming from. |

Sean... you have to be strong and keep your pecker up (hmmm.... maybe that advice is a wee bit tardy - recalling the wading in pond incident) Sue... I have no idea what the ad was about. I was too busy trying to find the volume knob and hide my blushes. |

The funniest (where the h*ll is that coming from) 'audio' I have had is the 'frog' ringtone. Didn't know it was a ringtone at the time and hadn't a clue where it was coming from. Thought someone had hacked my computer. Suddenly after many days of this I realised it was a 'ringtone' advert at the side of another forum I regularly visit. Every time my mouse touched the advert it triggered off the sound. It was great to realise I wasn't going mad [lol] Everyone who has heard this (now very popular) ringtone will realise how funny it was! Sue |
