feeding goldfish

Hi
When do people start to feed goldfish in a pond again after the winter?
Mine have started to come to the surface when I go near the pond.

What I want to know is, is it best to start feeding small amounts and build up or start feeding several times daily straight away?

RE: feeding goldfish

I am now feeding my pond fish (koi and goldfish) when they are active and looking for food. I am still only feeding a small amount of wheatgerm, but will move onto other food as the water warms up.
I believe that the recommended feeding amount is as much as they will eat in 5 minutes 3 or 4 times a day, but probably not at this time of year.

Never feed my goldfish! They weren't fed in their first home and I leave them to fend for themselves. Fat and healthy, all eight of them. My pond's 9' x 8' and I guess there's enough in there to keep them going.

One thing I have seen a couple of times is fish eating my pond snails (rotters!) I now don't have any of the long, conical snails left, only ramshorns, which I love. I don't know if they are harder to get at because of their shape. I figured that the goldfish would like slugs if they like eating my snails, so now I throw the small ones in if I find any!

The general rule is to not feed your fish when the temp is below 5 degrees. You should be fine to start giving them some food now, but only as much as they will eat otherwise the food will sink to the bottom and encourage algae.
