Pink frog.

| No, I'm not drunk! Yes, I know it's April Fool's day, but this really is no joke!
I caught sight of movement in my pond yesterday and, when I investigated, I discovered a frog scrum going on. There was one lot of spawn which was the first of the year, and one male was doing what comes naturally, but his choice of partner was a pale salmon-pink coloured frog with an enormous bulging belly. She was twice his width and he held on for dear life for so long that I left them to it. When I returned, they had separated and there was a new lot of spawn, but instead of black nuclei, they were all white.
Does anyone have any ideas? Could the spawn all have been born dead or is it possible that I'm going to have a load of pink taddies swimming around my pond?!!!!
Has anyone seen this before?
I haven't been out yet this morning because it's only just stopped belting down with rain. Should I separate this spawn into a bucket? Am I right in thinking that goldfish eat spawn, because I want to see if this lot actually come to anything. I didn't get a close enough look to see if the female is totally albino or not. Maybe she's some sort of leucocystic mutant!!

Oooerr.... I'd definately separate at least some of the spawn, if you dont, you'll kick yourself if Jaws or some vulture comes and has it for breakfast before you have a chance to see if its unfertilised or albino...

Thanks! I'll get some out tomorrow. I take it you can keep spawn in a bucket or does it need a larger space? I've been looking up the Ranavirus thing, but the frog didn't look ill or bleeding or anything, just exceedingly fat! The whole of its top was the same colour, but I didn't get to see its underneath. No sign of it today, either. Just three frogs left out of the seven I saw yesterday. Hope it isn't that dreadful disease. Maybe someone else will come up with some answers for me. Big Kid

Frogs can look a bit flushed during breeding. If you have a photo, send it to Froglife. Even if you don't, email them a description (see other threads for links) and ask for advice. Give them your postcode too. |

Thanks for help. I don't have a picture but I think I'll contact Froglife anyway. So frogs can look a bit flushed during breeding, eh? No amount of frenzy could turn one this colour!! Maybe I should re-write Kermit's song to sing "It's not easy being pink...." Will report back if I get any feedback.

Found a site that has an picture of an albino frog, that looks pretty pink to me! Tried to link it but the site won't accept it, so try googeling frogland and albino. I am not sure whether there are problems with fertility and albinoism, but I think there are some problems. I know there are problems with eyesight. Good luck with the taddies, and you might fnd as they get bigger but before cat food stage, that a bit of squidgy boiled lettuce goes down well.

Ta for this. I'll try a Google search and have a look. Didn't know taddies like lettuce. Lettuce hope the pink ones have the same taste in grub!

I googled albinoism and fertility, and it doesn't look like there are fertility problems with the condition. It is a recessive gene so pinkie would have to mate with a frog carrying the gene, and then it would be a 50/50 chance for each tadpole. But given the gene pool giving rise to pinkie had to have at least two frogs carrying the recessive gene, then who knows what genetic wonders are lurking in your pool! You will know soon enough what is happening to your spawn. Good luck!

I have had a pink/red frog in my garden for the past three years. I have a photo of it but am not sure how to post. Think I have had problems trying to post pictures in the past.

Lucky you! I'd love to see a pic. I reckon we are the chosen ones!!! I've not posted pictures myself, but I think I have info somewhere about how to do it. Will post again if I can find it.

Wow! What a great picture. Wish I could see mine again, but I don't have a decent digital camera, so won't be able to post a pic unless I can rope someone in who has got one. My frog is very pale in comparison. A pale salmon pink colour.

I noticed last night that we also have a frog with a pink/red colouring as well, so maybe they are not as rare as we thought. It was nice to see mine. I think Sonny took a photo of it so I will put it on my website forum. We also had a lime green one compared to the normal green but they are often all sorts of colours. It is lovely to see them all.
