I am a pump off'r during winter and yesterday I switched on the filter pump, it draws from the bottom of the deep. The surface water was at 11C the water coming up from the bottom was at 8C.

I guess if you're drawing from the bottom and returning to the top within a short time the temp. will be fairly uniform. I'm suprised you don't run your pump all year.

Not with temps like this.

I'm suprised you haven't been influenced by the other boards you frequent and got some covers on your pond as a minimum winter precaution.

Sean
My ponds would be like that if I didn't have the pumps running all winter.
The constantly moving water stops a build up of ice also keeps the 'canal' between both ponds open all winter.
I don't have a pump running in the wildlife pond and the difference in the thickness of ice is very marked.
If I switched the pumps off during Winter I would also be worried about water in the underground 'plumbing' freezing as this is impossible to completely drain.
We live very high above sea level and can get extremes of cold weather 'up here'.
