Another pond project? Talk me out of it plz

| Now that the lower garden is sort of finished (need to plant some trees), I now need to sort out my upper garden area.
Work starts in proper in May... the plan so far: (get rid of all grass), stone circle for table and chairs, a herb wheel, then either a couple of raised flower beds OR an ornamental pond!
Ballistade has just been put up around my decking area and needs to be 'stained'. How do metal fittings get disguised?
Its pretty hard to get a shot of the upper garden, it curves round. Should I have another pond? The possible pond locations are either in front or to the side of decked area... what do you think?

| Since you're starting from scratch, and its a blank tapestry so to speak...what about a rill, or even a cascade? It would lead your eye down the garden and link the various 'rooms'. Think of the sound as well as the planting potential. Sorry, I'm not very good at talking people out of mad ideas! And you don't really want to be talked out of a pond, do you? |

| Hmmm.... rill? what's one of those? I should've mentioned that I will be on a really tight budget, so if I did have a pond, it would have to be simple (cheapish). Because I want to get rid of the upper grass, I am fearful of ending up with a concrete horror. Paving costs heaps, so a pond would reduce the costs? One side of the upper garden is dominated by 3 red robin trees... they (effectively) provide me with some privacy from my sister next door (when my neices see me enjoying a read on the patio... they make a bee-line for me and shatter the peace!) Would a raised pond be expensive? Any tips / ideas? Do you think I'm over-doing things by having a second pond? (I know that someone on here has 4!!!). |

| A rill is a bit like a man-made stream going downhill in rather long steps. It can be made of brick, stone, or even stainless steel. A steeper one with lots of steps is a cascade. They usually connect 2 ponds or water-features, so of course would need a pump. I saw a brick one in a book once (Waterfeatures for a small garden) and was really struck by the idea. A National Trust place nearby has a lovely one in a sloping garden that is fringed by planting and paving. I just now browsed on google for 'rill' and found a couple examples on bespoke gardening sites (one really boring!!). But this may be more my fantasy than yours! Have you thought of a moat and drawbridge for your nieces and nephews? An Englishwoman's home is her castle! |

I've just found this one on a google image search:
I like it... so what's stopping you from having one yourself? Thinking it may be a bit too formal for my garden. I saw a nice example on another pond site, but need to get permission before posting her picture. Moat sounds an excellent remedy re the neighbours! |

Have a Maze and the children could be lost for hours !!! That's a great picture of the pond and rill. Too formal for me as well because my garden is all over the place, not at all ordered and precise, but I really like it. If a pond might be too much what about just a water feature of some sort? I like your idea of raised beds, maybe in circles to match the stone circle seating and dining area. Even the water feature could be placed in a circle. I already love your garden as it is and you have done so much to the house and garden making it beautifull. Alison |

| Alison, you are always so sweet! I'm thinking everyone must've had enough of my hair-brained ideas... I always seem to be knee deep in something or other! Think I'll go this one alone and feedback later! |
