For any of you in the north east, watch BBC1 at 6.30pm for a bit on newts (you may be able to spot me by the hair!).
I think after the broadast you may be able to watch online for 24 hours here:

Watch the latest edition http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/looknorthnecumbria/
The filming just took over 2 hours, but it's a one and a half minute spot to fill.

Tried, but my computer won't let real player download and need to get hubby to sort.

Looking forward to spotting your hair--any hints on identification?

Speaking of identification, I can't decide if I have common or palmate newts. Each time I think I'm sure I get my doubts. They are very unspotty on the belly, and rather small, but none of them have the big back feet. Any thoughts?

A couple are getting very fat gorging on all the tadpoles!

It's about 20 mins into the programme and you will see the Springwatch background if you are fast forwarding.
Palmates are meant to have unspotted chins, otherwise the females look similar to smooth.
Males don't have the blueish stripe towards the bottom of the tail, and don't have any jaggedy bits on the males' crests. Smooth males develop what look like flappy toenails when they swim, but palmates have the webbing between their toes.
