| catfish tend to grow rather large rather quick, and although they are mainly scavengers they will take a fish that stays still long enough to get eaten. |

glad you posted that Kazzie, I thought the sun had gone to my head however it looks like a duplicated post from the 'never put a catfish in the pond thread'. Newts eh sean, I keep looking but no luck yet. We had a lovely article in the local paper about a local village road being closed for three days whilst newts toads and frogs crossed the road. Happens every year 17th - 20th March. Great crested newts among the travellers too. I've only lived here for 40 years, and can't understand how I missed this. I'll be there next year with my camera- toad crossing lady. |

| Congratulations Sean! I can only seem to see mine at night at present, as they are shy. Love the way they brake by sticking their flippers out. May you have newtlets in the future as a reward for rescuing the tadpoles. I did congratulate you yesterday by the way, but for some reason it went missing. Is there a gremlin in the system with missing messages and ones that hop about? |

| cleaning out my Saford pond of water starwort, dozens of newts falling out of each clumpful ! Thousands of taddies gathered at my pebble beach some of them leaping out of the water. Went out with my torch 15 minutes ago and the whole surface area is covered with basking taddies. All these and a population of approx 30 newts and two goldfish. Lets hope your newt population flourishes Sean, Good Luck They're beautiful creatures. Dave |

| What a coincidence... a single newt has just this weekend appeared in my pond. Appears to be a smooth newt, about 3inches long, female (or non-breeding male?). I was mighty surprised, and very pleased... |

I want newts! Well done Sean for all your nurturing. Pity there aren't 2...but you never know. Try a torch tonight. |

My pond is teeming with newts (and toad tadpoles)! There were at least one dozen fully grown palmates and smoothies a couple of weeks ago, and recently a whole lot of little ones have moved in. I also find tiny little ones under logs and stones in the garden (they live on land until big enough to mate). Not shy, either - they come right up onto the shallow end. I have no idea what the secret is - my previous tiny pond also acquired newts straight away. All I ever put in my ponds was water, plants, pebbles and gravel. - No fish, though. |

| Anyanka and Dave I am so jealous of your newt and tad population. I hardly ever see my newt. I know I have at least one because when we did the new pond I found one under the waterfall. I think the tadpoles could be getting eaten by the magpie. He came down had a drink and then so swiftly pulled out a large clump of blanketweed and ate all the grubs and maybe tadpoles which were on it. I thought it was brilliant how he just knew where to look even if it did mean I lost some babies. |
