Perhaps not so common newt

For some time I have been convinced my newts were common ones--but not really sure. I really think now that they are in their mating colours, that they are palmate newts. Palmate newts are more common in Devon than elsewhere, so it is more likely.

Also just found out that newts live for 10 years!! I wondered as a couple of them are quite distinctive in their shape. One (known as Kinky) has a distinctive crooked tail and is back for the third year.

There are great crested newts about 2 miles away, so who knows. Perhaps one or two will get very adventurous.

No sight of the kingfisher though so far, at least when I have been home. But the stickelback population seems to remain very very stable!!

Never ceased to be amazed by what having a big hole in the ground filled with water, attracts.

Palmate newts are smaller than smooth newts.
If you can get close to a breeding male, look at the tip of it's tail, look to see if there is a "filament" ie thread like bit protruding from the end.
The undersides of palmates are hardly spotty and can be pinkier.
Look at the Froglife website or British herpetological soc for indentification.

Here is a link that might be useful: newt identification

Great Crested Newts

Hi
The Devon Reptile & Amphibian Group are currently running a Great Crested Newt Project, funded by the Biodiversity Steering Group, to find out the distribution of Great Crested Newts in Devon. Chippewacat mentioned that there are GCN 2 miles down the road from where they live - is there any chance you could give us the details of the nearest village?
